Robo-call Company Heads into Liquidation After ICO Inquiry

A company believed to be responsible for millions of unsolicited and automated phone calls has been entered into liquidation after an investigation into its processes by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Prodial Ltd had been based in Brighton but has now been entered into liquidation by its directors after the body which acts as the UK’s data privacy watchdog completed their enquiries into its business.

The ICO has hit the company, believed to have been hiding its identity while being behind as many as 46 million automated phones calls, with an unprecedented fine of £350,000.

In excess of a thousand people complained to the ICO about the company, which made phone calls in great numbers on a daily basis and played a recorded message about PPI compensation claims to anyone who answered.

For many people, the PPI claim calls were coming through to their phones repeatedly and there wasn’t any obvious way for them to be stopped.

“This is one of the worst cases of cold calling we have ever come across. The volume of calls made in just a few months was staggering,” said Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner. 

“This was a company that knew it was breaking the law. A company director admitted that once the ICO became involved, the company shut down. That stopped the calls, but we want to send a clear message to other firms that this type of law-breaking will not pay. That is why we have handed out our highest ever fine.”

The ICO’s office has said that their enforcement team is now working with liquidators of Prodial Ltd’s affairs with a view to recovering as much of the £350,000 fine as possible.

Other companies around the country are also being targeted by the ICO’s office for their involvement in making large numbers of unsolicited phone calls.

A trio of Manchester-based companies were recently issued with notices and threatened with legal action unless they stop making automated phone calls to members of the public about mis-sold pension, PPI and debt management services.
